Learn how to carve a watermelon into a whale! Not only will it make a fun addition to children's party but it is also a creative way of serving fruit salad.
Materials
1 seedless watermelon - large in size and oblong in shape
Paring or kitchen knives
Green dry erase marker or a sharp pencil
Instructions
- Take a long and decently sized watermelon.
- Slice off about 1/4" piece from one of the sides to create a steady base.
- Use the image above as a guideline and draw the whale design onto the watermelon.
- Take a large knife to cut around the tail and head and a smaller one of a decorating tail to cut out the decorative edges.
- You will probably find it easier to remove the rind from the top in smaller pieces rather than one large piece.
- The eyes and mouth should be carved into the rind, removing only the outer dark green rind, revealing the lighter color underneath.
- Cut out a small "blow hole" from the top of the head section and insert dried flowers.
- Remove the flesh from inside the whale and fill with seasonal fruit salad of preference.
