Children will love this at a birthday and it makes an ideal pirate themed party food.It will make the table look fun and exciting and full of seasonal fresh fruits will taste delicious as well.
Materials
1 watermelon - oblong in shape
Erasable marker pen
Channel knife and Paring knife alternatively use the top of a vegetable peeler
Kitchen knife
Toothpicks
Melon baller
Other treasures: kiwi, starfruit, pineapple or other colorful fruit or choice
Plastic jewels, beads, or any additional decoration as desired
Instructions
- Take a good sized oblong watermelon.
- Rinse under cool water and thoroughly dry.
- Cut a slice from one side of the watermelon to create steady base. Save the removed piece for later.
- Use a dry erase marker pen and on the rind that you have removed draw the shapes of the key and handles using the image above for guidance. Carefully cut them out using a small knife.
- Taking the pen again, draw in the wavy line half way down the chest.
- Use a channel and paring knife to carve in the decorative features of the chest including the straps and lock.
- Use a large knife to cut through the wavy line that you drew onto the rind and separate the watermelon into two halves.
- Remove the flesh from both sides of the chest and cut into diamond shapes.
- Create a mix fruit salad using the diamond shapes watermelon and other colorful fruit of choice.
- Fill the chest with your fruit salad and decorate with your plastic jewels and beads.
- Use toothpicks to secure the handles to the ends of the chest.
