Materials
1 watermelon - seeded or seedless but preferably oblong
Sharp pencil or green dry erase marker
Melon baller
Paring and kitchen knives
Handful of toothpicks
Channel knife
Instructions
- Take your watermelon and cut off 1/4 inch from the stem end to form a stable base.
- Take your marker pen or pencil and draw on the facial features and decorations using the image above as a guide.
- A melon baller is perfect for scooping out the rind to form the nostrils.
- Cut out the mouth area, leaving enough surrounding rind to cut the teeth out of.
- Use a paring knife to carefully cut around each individual tooth. Use a spoon and remove a large section of flesh to create the mouth cavity.
- Cut out the eyes and once again remove some of the flesh from inside to create cavities. A channel knife is ideal for carving the details and decorative areas onto the face.
- Some of the rind that has been removed can be used to cut out a bone like shape to be secured to the top of the head using toothpicks.
