Instructions

  1.    Wash and dry the watermelon and cut 1/4" off of one side to create a stable base.
  2.    Draw in the outline of the dinosaur's mouth, making sure you leave enough rind at the back to support the top.
  3.     Cut out along the lines of the mouth and then hollow out the watermelon, keeping the flesh in large pieces as much as possible. insert a large rectangular piece of pineapple into the mouth to act as a support column.
  4.     Take the rind that was removed from the mouth and cut out shapes to be used as the eyebrows and nostrils.  A channel knife can be used for adding detail. Use the image above as a guide.
  5.     Use a melon baller to scoop out holes for eyes. Cut deeply enough so that the red flesh shows through.
  6.     Cut the watermelon flesh and pineapple into triangular pieces and use to fill the mouth of the dinosaur.
  7.     Carefully insert wooden skewers into the jaw line at random positions and lengths to act as teeth.
Caution: The wooden skewers are very sharp so a long spoon should be used to reach the fruit inside. Alternatively when it comes time to serve the fruit you may wish to remove the skewers, especially if children are helping themselves.
