Instructions

  1.     The main body of the submarine will be made using the long watermelon. The smaller one is needed for the tower, periscope and rudder.
  2.     Cut just over 1/4" from one side of the long watermelon to create a flat base. Slice at a slight angle so that the front will seem a little higher than the back of the submarine giving the appearance that it is sat in water.
  3.     Slice the top off the submarine, again at a slight angle so that the front appears bigger.
  4.     Hollow out the watermelon and save the flesh to use in the fruit salad.
  5.     Draw on and cut out two curved pieces from the second watermelon to create the tower. Create slits in each side and insert flaps as you can see in the image above. Secure the tower to the top of the submarine with toothpicks.
  6.     Next, again using the rind of the second watermelon, draw and cut pieces to form the rudder at the back.   Similarly to the tower, cut slits and insert flaps into the rudder. Secure in place with toothpicks.
  7.     Make the periscope using rind and inserting a blunted toothpick to use as the handle. Secure in place with more toothpicks.
  8.     Put the submarine on a platter and surround with blueberries, giving the appearance of water. Fill the sub with fresh fruit salad.
  9.     Replace the lid that we removed earlier. For the finishing touch add a toy captain in the tower.
