Carve this beautiful watermelon purse. It is the perfect addition to a female birthday party and is a popular design with children and adults alike. As well as looking great, filled with fresh fruit, it tastes great too.
Materials
1 watermelon - seedless and slightly oblong
Paper and scissors
Hot glue gun
Rhinestones and ribbon
Toothpicks or straight pins
Instructions
- Thoroughly wash the watermelon and then place on its side and cut in half.
- Take one half of the watermelon and cut an inch or so from the other end. Hollow out the flesh from this entire section as it will become the main body of the purse.
- Now take the other half that we have not yet used and cut in half so that you are left with two semi circles. From one of these sections slice off a piece about 2" thick. Remove the red flesh and the rind you are left with will become the handle. Make decorative cuts in the handle such as the scallop edge as you can see in the image above. Secure the handle in place above the main body of the purse using toothpicks.
- Using some of the remaining rind, cut out the purse pocket to be attached to the front.
- Use a piece of paper and draw on a pair of lips. Cut it out to use as a template and then from the flesh that you previously removed make lips shape pieces of fruit. You could also use a heart shaped cookie cutter.
- Fill the basket with whatever fruit you like, cut into lip and heart shapes. Decorate with toys, ribbons and rhinestones. You may need to use the hot glue gun to attach rhinestones to the outside of the purse.
