Perfect for a romantic occasion, try carving this watermelon lips and love basket. Filled with seasonal fresh fruit, this table decoration will taste just as sweet as it looks.
Materials
1-2 seedless watermelons - oblong shaped
Strawberries
Kitchen & paring knives
Chopping board
Green dry erase marker pen
Melon scoop
Handful of toothpicks
Wooden skewers
Fruits to make the fruit salad for filling
Assorted cookie cutters preferable X, O, and Hearts
Instructions
- Rinse watermelon and thoroughly dry
- Cut about 1/4 inch from one end of the watermelon to create a steady base.
- Take your marker pen and draw in the scallop design edge roughly in the middle of the watermelon.
- Carefully cut along your line with a paring knife and then hollow out the base end that will become the basket.
- On the removed half, draw the outline of a large pair of lips. Carefully cut them out and once they are separate from the watermelon, gently slice off the rind so that you are left with a pair of red watermelon lips.
- Cut the left over flesh into 1/4" slices and fashion into X, O and heart shapes.
- Secure the lips onto the base of the basket using toothpicks and skewers.
- Slice strawberries length ways into 3 pieces. Take the centre piece with the green stem attached and using toothpicks use them to decorate the edge of the basket. Put the unused parts of the strawberries in the fruit salad.
- Position the basket on a platter and fill the carving with mixed seasonal fruit.
