Carve this great watermelon kitty design, perfect for children parties and should even encourage them to eat some of the delicious fresh fruit salad that it contains.
Materials
1 seedless Watermelon - round
1 melon scoop
1 channel knife or alternatively use the end of a vegetable peeler
1 paring knife
1 chef's knife
A handful of toothpicks
4 black licorice strings
Dry erase marker pen
Optional cat themed cookie cutters
Instructions
- Rinse and dry a round watermelon. Cut off 1/4" form one side to create a base.
- With the marker pen, draw the kitty cat design, copying the picture above.
- Using a paring knife cut off the top of the melon being careful to go around the ears without cutting them off. Hollow out the inside of the melon keeping the flesh for later.
- Make the triangular nose from some of the rind you removed from the top.
- Remove a layer of the outer green rind from the edges of the triangle so that it stands out when secured on the face.
- Make the two round eyes using the melon scoop.
- Use the channel knife to apply detail to the ears and to outline the face.
- With the paring knife cut out holes in which to secure the melon balls for eyes.
- Use toothpicks to hold the licorice strings into place in the shape of the mouth and whiskers.
- Secure the nose with a toothpick.
- Fill the cat with fruit salad.
- Put a collar on the bottom for the finishing kitty cat look.
