This watermelon hedgehog carving is a great alternative way of serving fruit. It is easy to make following our simple instructions.
Materials
1 round seedless watermelon - any size
Chopping Board
A Large kitchen knife and paring knives
Green dry erase marker
Toothpicks
Large bowl and spoon
Instructions
- Rinse the watermelon under cool water and thoroughly dry.
- Cut off about 1/4" from one side of the watermelon to provide a sturdy base. Pay attention not to cut too far into the white rind or you run the risk of liquid seeping out from the bottom. Position the watermelon keeping in mind that the stem will become the nose.
- With your marker pen draw a square that covers the top of the hedgehog. The front edge should start a good 3 inches back so that you don't cut into the hedgehogs face and should come about half way down the melon. Now carefully cut out your lines and save the piece that is removed.
- Hollow out the hedgehog keeping in in large pieces as much as possible so that it can be chopped into cubes.
- Use a small knife to cut pointy bits in the edge of the hedgehog that were left by removing the tip piece. The point will resemble a hedgehogs spikes as you can see in the picture.
- From the rind that you removed cut out a strip and from this strip cut out a triangle. This will be the nose and can be secured using toothpicks and should cover the stem. Using another toothpick secure a blackberry to the end of the nose.
- Use the rest of the rind to cut out four equal paw shapes. Again use chop sticks to attach them to the underside of the hedgehog.
- For the ears we will use a knife to draw the curved lines that meet at the top in the middle. From the inside of the hedgehog gently push inside the lines we just cut so that the ears protrude slightly.
- The eyes are simply two blueberries secured with a toothpick.
- Now fill the hedgehog with the watermelon cubes and stick toothpicks on the top level to not only resemble the hedgehogs coat but also make it easy to eat.
